Message from The Principal

A very warm welcome to the DPS Model United Nations 2009.

The United Nations was founded to prevent and resolve international conflicts and help build a culture of peace in the world.  The acts of cooperation between countries and continents form a strong bondage which leads the world towards the most important mission – Peace. Simulating the United Nations will help in building this culture of peace and tolerance in our world and what best place to start, than in our schools where young minds will accept, mold and ponder on issues that concerns mankind.

The idea of world peace is, in itself, a relatively recent idea. Not so long ago, all over the world every generation had had "its" war. A certain fatalism towards war was rooted in our mentalities with war being considered as inevitable and peace a vague utopian dream. But today, peace is gradually gaining ground.  Individual people also play an essential role in the culture of peace, not only at an  international level but also at a national level. It is up to each citizen to establish a culture of peace, beginning at home, schools and colleges and working up to international institutions. So we must all continue to strive to ensure that the progression of peace continues.  In this context the UN undoubtedly is a beacon.

So in a world where UN diplomacy is multifaceted and multilevel, students can benefit from alternative UN based simulations that draw on the Model United Nations format, but move beyond it as well.
In DPS, such efforts have started to bring about not only awareness, but also to contribute positively to global issues. DPS MUN becomes a classroom to teach international relations.  It provides students with the opportunity to explore the importance of negotiation, bargaining, diplomacy, and strategy in the context of such organizations.

Meeting multicultural, multilingual fellow diplomats representing various countries under the banner of  DPSMUN will bring forth the opinions of individuals, will help foster sympathy for the underprivileged and will create in the student-diplomat the right attitude that will help build a new world community.  The goal is to put the students into the role of ambassadors or “delegates” in typical Model UN parlance,  to debate a set of agenda items using some variant of parliamentary rules of procedure, and to negotiate with other “delegates” in the drafting of resolutions, or in some cases committee reports.  Students are provided with the opportunity to explore the importance of negotiation, bargaining, diplomacy and strategy.

The stimulating debates, lobbying, caucuses will hone the skills of every student participant and create a well read, researched and speaking individuals who will take this experience further in their lives.
Welcome once again for a stimulating DPSMUN experience.

Warm Regards,
