IYMC- Mathematica 2018

The biennial International Young Mathematicians’ Convention (IYMC) was held from 2nd to 5th December 2018 in City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, India. A team consisting of 4 students from the senior category (grade 12) and 9 students from the junior category (grade 10) represented DPS Sharjah at this prestigious competition, and made the school proud by bringing home 8 medals and various certificates.

In the individual contest, in the senior category,

Siddharth Sundaram - GOLD MEDAL

Barath Rajesh & Mridul Manoj – SILVER MEDAL

while in the junior category,

Varun V – SILVER MEDAL

Astha T, Karishma, Harshita & Nilisha – BRONZE MEDALS

Also, in the team event, 2 of the junior teams were second runner-ups. A cultural evening was also held where the teams could showcase the culture of their country in innovative ways. DPS team performed an Arabic cultural dance performance and won the trophy titled “TEAM IN VOGUE”

Through this experience, the students learned that mathematics is not just about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms, it’s about understanding. Also, the greater purpose of this contest, which was to unite people of various countries under the universal language of mathematics, was realized when the participants interacted with students from various different countries of the world. The school’s motto, “Jai Jagat” (“Hail the World”), instead of the popular greeting “Jai Hind”, clearly emphasizes this grander objective of uniting the world.

All in all, it was an enriching and fun-filled experience, and DPS Sharjah will definitely look forward to participating in this competition again.
