Ex- dipsite, Humaira Tasneem dons the captain's hat for the women's cricket team of the UAE
|
DPS, Sharjah takes pride in the striking achievement of our former student, Humaira Tasneem, the new captain of the UAE women's cricket team. In the sports landscape of the region, where women’s cricket doesn’t enjoy the popularity of other sports, Humaira has risen above all challenges and is now leading from the front. The Captain Cool with her calm and unruffled words has made the top story in the Weekend Magazine, the Khaleej Times.
Humaira's own cricketing career started at the age of 12 at her alma mater, Delhi Private School, Sharjah. Reflecting on that time, she says “My school was the encouraging environment that led me to think about pursuing cricket seriously.” She pursued architecture but kept her sport instinct intact within her which has been well nurtured since her schooling. Architecture being a demanding course, the very idea of playing cricket simultaneously seemed like a herculean task for the young cricketer, but her determination helped her sailed through. “The triumphs come with challenges” says Humaira who is also currently working as a designer and illustrator at an advertising agency. She juggled between studies and sports, later job and practice but eventually found a balance and that has ultimately taken her to greater heights. Her unique personality connotes the smart, innovative, multitalented, dynamic and confident learners’ profile of DPS, Sharjah.
The big hitter of UAE women’s cricket holding the captaincy of the team has grabbed the front page of the magazine. Humaira adds on that she is aware of the enormity of the challenge that she has taken on. While women's cricket is still not as popular as other sports, she says it has come a long way and that gives her hope for the future.
Humaira says that Emirates Cricket's initiatives, such as a talent hunt, are increasingly encouraging young women from different nationalities to participate in the sport. "There are younger girls from different nationalities playing cricket, but they are mostly beginners," says Humaira. As the captain of the team, she not only helms them on the ground but also fuels the hopes and aspirations of younger, fiercely passionate girls, who want to make something out of their dream.
DPS, Sharjah has been always in lime light with ingenious achievements of our students. When our students become news makers through their accomplishments in various fields, DPS family once again ascertains that the indigenous model of education imparted to students is in par with our vision which is nurturing students to be confident, respectful citizens and providing them the necessary tools to be successful in life as empowered contributors to global society.
At DPS, we are overwhelmed with pride and contentment to watch our students being the flag bearers of Delhi Private School, Sharjah throughout their life span.
